Objective of the study was to make a comparative analysis of the Olympic Games versus the regional games. Subject to the study were the top-ranking large-scale regional sport events including the Asian Games (with participation of Asian nations only), African Games (of the African nations), Mediterranean Games, European Games (for all the European NOCs) and the Pan-American Games (hosting nations of both American continents). The study data and analysis yielded the sets of criteria for a sport discipline being included in the regional games program: geographic criteria; historical sports traditional for the host continent; and popular sports imported from the other continents.
The authors found that the regional games are in progress playing a growing role in their regions and encouraging young people to go in for sports. Nations participating in the regional games tend to use them for their athletes’ training and testing for the Olympic Games and other international top-ranking events. It is also important that the regional games are increasingly popular not only on their continents but the world over.

Keywords: regional games, Asian Games, Pan-American Games, African Games, Mediterranean Games, European Games, Olympic sports.
