Objective of the study was to rate progress in attention of junior chess players as a result of a chess assembly. Tests under the study were performed on August 3-10, 2016 during the chess assembly of the Russian Chess School hosted by Horizon Sport and Health Centre in the Moscow region. The players’ attention was rated using special alphabetic correction tables to obtain the quantitative progress rating indicators. The attention tests were performed in the first and final days of the event.
The junior chess players were split into the following two groups: Group 1 of preschool age (3-6 years old) children; and Group 2 of school age (7-13 years old) children. The tests were designed on an individualised basis to obtain the following data: productivity rate; correctly processed characters; erroneously processed characters; missed characters; performance accuracy rate; and attention productivity rate. Based on the study data, the authors concluded that such chess assemblies are beneficial for junior beginner players not only in terms of the practical competitive experience and health improvement opportunities but also in the attention developing aspect.
