Objective of the study was to analyse the qualitative and quantitative data on the high-pace jump serves in volleyball, their targets and most common performance errors versus the serve scoring rates.
The jump serve statistics, targets and performance errors were obtained by an analysis of the video records of the 2015/16 Russian Volleyball Championship of elite men’s teams plus graphical data generated by Data Volley 2007 software. We applied the A.V. Belyaev’s formulae to estimate the serve scoring rates.
The study data and analyses demonstrated that tactically the high-pace jump serve (with the scoring rate estimated at 78-79%) in modern men’s volleyball comprise one of the key difficulties for the opposing team in its combinatory attack organisation. The jump serving players were found to prefer the centre of the court (zone 6) as a target. Most common errors in the jump serve include hitting the net and serves out the back line when the player fails to put the required topspin on the ball.

Keywords: volleyball, serve, scoring rate.
