Abstract

Objective of the study is to determine the motivational and value potential of the discipline “Physical Culture” on the basis of a survey of Russian and Kazakh students. Methods and structure of the study. A survey of university students of Russia and Kazakhstan (N=588) was conducted regarding the compulsory discipline “Physical Culture”, including “Elective courses in physical education”. Results and conclusions. A persistent dissonance was revealed between the institutional requirement (“to get a pass”) and the personal goals of students (“health”, “tone”, “communication”): 61.8% of respondents consider the discipline optional, 44.3% assess the standards as “a completely useless activity”, while 97% of absences are formalised “due to illness”. Content analysis of open-ended answers identified key barriers: an inconvenient schedule, the personality of the teacher. Relying on the three-stage model of forming a value attitude towards PC (“I want” → “I need” → “I can”), it was shown that the majority of students (54%) get stuck at the initial stage, not achieving self-actualisation. The comparative analysis of Russia and Kazakhstan did not reveal significant differences, which allows us to speak of the systemic nature of the problem in the post-Soviet educational space. The question is raised of the necessity of revising the compulsory status of the discipline or its radical transformation.
