Objective of the study was to develop an optimal model of speed dynamics in 400 m run.
Methods and structure of the study. For the purposes of the study, the following methods were applied: theoretical analysis of literary data, methods of estimation of running parameters, mathematical statistics methods. The study was carried out during the Moscow Youth Athletics Competition conducted from May to September 2019. Sampled for the study were the 16-17 year-old male athletes belonging to the II and III sports categories (n=37).
Results of the study and conclusions. We identified the peculiarities of the running speed dynamics in 400 m run at different distance segments: the young males covered the second 100 m segment faster than the first one, and the third - slower than the second one, the final 100 m segment was covered significantly slower than the third one.
The time of running the 400 m distance depends on the step length and frequency. We determined the correlation between the running speed rates and the running step structure at different distance segments, as well as identified the specifics of this correlation in the athletes of different sports qualifications. We developed the training tools to form the skill of smoother movement along the 400 m distance using the rational ratio between step length and frequency. The young males should cover the first 100 m segment 0.3-0.5 sec slower than their individual result in 100 m run, and the first 200 m segment - 1.3-1.8 sec slower than their individual result in 200 m run. At the last 100 m, the running speed decreases mainly due to the decrease in step frequency.
The authors designed an optimal model of speed dynamics in 400 m run for junior male athletes, which makes it possible to achieve a higher sports result. The regularity of changes in running speed over the distance is an important factor in the improvement of athletic performance in 400 m run, which is largely determined by the possibility to control the running parameters.

Keywords: young male athletes, 400 m run, step length and frequency, running speed, correlation between indicators, control of running parameters.
