Objective of the study was to identify the effects of family interaction on the degree of involvement of school-aged children in physical education and sports activities.
Methods and structure of the study. The study was carried out as part of the international project Health Behaviourin School-aged Children. Sampled for the study were the school-aged (of 11, 13, and 15 years of age) children of both sexes (n=1,850). The respondents were asked about the ease of communication and moral support in their families, joint exercising, and the habit of discussing important issues with their families.
For the study purposes, two groups of schoolchildren were formed: Group 1 (MVPA3) comprised the schoolchildren, who practiced 3 days per week, Group 2 (MVPA7) - 7 days per week. We analyzed the indicators characterizing family interaction and the degree of involvement of the school-aged children to physical education and sports activities. The significance of inter-group differences was assessed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test.
Results of the study and conclusions. The findings testify to the significant role of the family in physical activity of school-aged children.
As follows from the data provided, family interaction has a great impact on the level of physical activity of school-aged children. Family climate, attention to children’s issues, friendly discussion, support and personal example of family members is a crucial resource for increasing the degree of involvement of schoolchildren in physical education and sports activities.
