Objective of the study was to analyze the motivational preferences and degree of involvement of school-aged children in physical education and sports activities.
Methods and structure of the study. The article presents an analysis of the results of the mass anonymous survey of the school-aged (of 11, 13, and 15 years of age) children of both sexes, conducted during the 2017/2018 research cycle of the international project Health Behaviourin School-aged Children (HBSC). The teaching staff of the Federal State Budget Institution "Saint-Petersburg Scientific-Research Institute For Physical Culture" developed special software for processing and analyzing the survey results, a web-service with the Russian-language international questionnaire, and a cloud database for computer-assisted web interviewing.
The criterion for the evaluation of the degree of involvement of schoolchildren in physical education and sports activities was the indicator of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Two groups were formed: Group 1 (moderately involved - MVPA3) comprised the schoolchildren, who practiced 3 days per week, Group 2 (high degree of involvement - MVPA7) - 7 days per week.
Results of the study and conclusions. The findings revealed the peculiarities of the motivational preferences of the school-aged children in view of the levels of their physical activity. In answering the question on health self-assessment, 25.8% of boys and 25% of girls of the MVPA3 group chose the option "excellent", while in the MVPA7 group this option was chosen by 64.7% of boys and 44.7% of girls. The inter-group differences in terms of health self-assessment were significant at p<0.01 (for the boys) and p<0.05 (for the girls). For the boys and girls of the MVPA7 group, the motivational preferences related to social self-expression needs were of great importance.
