Objective of the study was to conduct a sociological analysis of the positive and negative aspects of development of the Olympic Movement to adjust the format of the Youth Olympic Games.
Methods and structure of the study. A questionnaire survey was conducted to identify the attitude of the sports university teaching staff, coaches and specialists in the field of sports to the existing format of the Youth Olympic Games. The survey was held in December 2019 and involved 50 leading specialists in the field of physical culture and sports. The sampling population was determined by the method of main massif. The questionnaire survey form offered 10 questions designed to reveal positive and negative aspects of development of the Youth Olympic Movement.
Study results and conclusions. During the sociological survey, the respondents proposed to adjust the format of the Youth Olympic Games by dividing the participants into the age groups of 15-16 and 17-18 years, participating in competitions for amateur athletes as opposed to professional ones, including purely Olympic sports, participating under the neutral Olympic flag but with distinctive emblems on the uniforms illustrating the belonging to the participating country, etc. Within the framework of strengthening of both international cooperation and cultural component of the Youth Olympic Games, the respondents proposed to conduct exhibition performances not only in individual, but also in team sports with an international entry list, as well as implement educational programs on the history of sports and Olympic Movement, involving conferences, symposia, blitzes, Olympic quizzes, quests, etc.
During the questionnaire survey, the participants offered an alternative option of prize money for winners of the Youth Olympic Games in the form of grants: for example, for education, visiting the IOC, participating in training events with the country's team, for visiting the Olympic games as a spectator.
