Objective of the study was to identify the degree of manifestation of personality characteristics in academic rowers at the pre-season training stage.
Methods and structure of research. Sampled for the study were 20 rowers (15 boys and 5 girls) of the sports perfection group aged from 15 to 18 years. The study was conducted during the annual training cycle during the preparation for the championship of Russia and included 4 stages. At the end of each stage, control testing was carried out. To identify the degree of manifestation of the personality characteristics in the rowers, we used the Spielberger-Khanin questionnaire, A.V. Petrovsky test, Y. Strelau Temperament Inventory.
Results of the study. The state and trait anxiety rates in the academic rowers increased from the 1st to the 4th stage. While the self-esteem and self-criticism rates decreased. According to the authors, this is due to the lack of considerable sports experience and psychological readiness of the 15-18 year-old athletes. Thus, coaches could plan the training process more effectively and creatively, taking into account the psychological characteristics of the personality of young rowers.
Conclusion. The practical significance of the results obtained is in the fact that coaches, having a good knowledge base of personal characteristics of their athletes, could form crews more effectively, choosing the most appropriate roles for the rowers; form in the athletes and manage sustainable motivation; adjust the training plan based on the data obtained, while increasing the effectiveness of the training process.
