The study analyzes the origins and history of the ribbon routines in modern rhythmic gymnastics from ballet performances to the present days; mentions names of the pioneers of the ribbon routines in choreographic production; and traces the way made by ribbon to modern rhythmic gymnastics on the whole and competitive routines of elite gymnasts in particular. The study overviews the history of the ribbon elements, sticks (that were initially made of wood) and modern designs. Having analyzed the special studies of the classical ballet and rhythmic gymnastics history, we found that the modern sport made a great progress through synthesis of many rhythmic and artistic systems and improvements in the ribbon design and quality. It is underlined that a due priority shall be given to the technical skills and other progress aspects being duly harmonized in the modern highly-skilled rhythmic gymnasts’ education and training process.

Keywords: ribbon routines, classical ballet, school of movements, qualification program, origins.
