Background. The “Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kultury” Journal has been successful as a national sport research periodical for more than 90 years. It has been since the Soviet times that it published materials on the new research achievements in the national physical culture and sports sector. The research edition has come to the modern days still devoted to its noble mission of keeping people duly informed on the latest accomplishments of the national sport science and practice.

Objective of the study was to give an overview of the modern research trends in the modern national sport science based on a content analysis of the “Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kultury” Journal publications for the year of 2016.

Study results and discussion. The Journal has published about 400 study reports for the year of 2016. Given hereunder in Table 1 are the results of the publishing activity content analysis classified by the research fields. We are glad to note that most of the published materials were classified with the regular “Looking for a new breakthrough”. The publications cover a wide range of innovative research issues in the modern sport philosophy (by V.A. Baranov), research education methodologies (by A.F. Zakirova, I.V. Manzheley), GTO Complex implementation technologies applied in the general education system (by V.P. Guba, V.V. Konovalov, V.V. Presniakov), humanistic issues of modern sports (by А.А. Peredelskiy, I.B. Kormazeva) and many other priority issues of the national sports science that need to be solved.

Note: *content analyses of these regular features please find hereunder

It should be mentioned, however, that the national sport science still gives too little attention (5 articles for the period under report) to the priority matters of athletic training systems and training process control. This finding is supported by the content analysis of the Soviet-period dissertations versus those defended for the year of 2015 [1] that found 75% and 20% of the Soviet dissertations considering the athletic training process and mass physical culture development issues, respectively. The present situation is very much different as the sport research and mass physical culture related topics are found to amount to 39% and 37% of the total content, respectively [2]. On the other hand, our content analysis of the “Trainer: journal in journal” regular showed the following: serious research is taking place in the elite paralympic athletes’ training process control domain (by A.G. Abalyan, E.B. Myakinchenko et al.); innovative approaches to the all-round athletes’ training processes are being developed (by V.V. Efimov et al.); applied (converted) gymnastic practices being proposed for the sport reserve training in some team sports (by E.T. Kolunin) etc.; that means that the elite athletic training processes are being tackled by the national research community – albeit, in our opinion, the research still need to be put on a more systemic basis.

Given in Table 2 hereunder are the results of the content analysis for the regular features “Yugra – science and sport” and “Siberia – science and sport”. The data demonstrates that the Yugra sport research community shows fairly wide interests in the sport science, with a special emphasis on the most promising ways to improve the children and young peoples’ health standards (reports by A.A. Bruykov, V.V. Apokin, A.V. Gulin et al.) as this topic is undoubtedly ranked among the top priorities by the modern society.

The Siberian sport researchers showed the highest interest to a few research fields including the biomechanics of sport exercises (by V.I. Zagrevskiy, O.I. Zagrevskaya), sport physiology (L.V. Kapilevich, E.Y. D'yakova), physical training for extreme activities (V.G. Shilko et al.) that are also given a high priority by the modern sport science.

We would recommend in conclusion that the leaders of the theoretical and practical studies in the national physical culture and sports should give more attention to the athletic progress related topics with a special emphasis on the innovative technology design projects and new athletic training systems. It is largely due to the gap between the theory and innovative practices that the Russian sports have come to the present crisis situation. The gap may be bridged only when the national researchers and coaches unite their efforts for a seriously backed theoretical and practical breakthrough in the means, methods and forms of the modern athletic training systems.

Abstract

It is largely due to the gap between the theory and innovative practices that the Russian sports have come to the present crisis situation. The gap may be bridged only when the national researchers and coaches unite their efforts for a seriously backed theoretical and practical breakthrough in the means, methods and forms of the modern athletic training systems. The article gives an overview of the classified publications in the “Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kultury” Journal for the year of 2016. The information flow analysis gave the means to outline the modern sport science development trends and the top-priority problems need to be addressed by the specialists.
