The article reports practical experience of the men’s national modern pentathlon team of Russia training in the combined cross country running and shooting event. The proposed pentathlon run training method includes the following three components: technical training; strength endurance training by the body conditioning; and speed endurance building methods. The technique excelling practices take 5% of the total time of the running practices, with the training process dominated by special running exercises and multi-jump practices designed to generally mimic the key internal and external elements of the running sequence. The body conditioning component (taking up to 100 hours in the annual training cycle) is designed to strengthen the trunk and foot flexor muscles and the thigh and shin extensor muscles. Speed endurance program within the total running practice of 2400-2500 km includes the following four regimes: aerobic rehabilitation (HR of 120-140 beats per min) making up 53% of the total; aerobic developmental (HR of 145-165 beats per min) making up 35%; aerobic-anaerobic mixed (HR of 170-180 beats per min) making up 15% of the total; and the anaerobic regime (HR of 185+ beats per min) making up 3% of the total load. Special running practices were designed to combine the aerobic-anaerobic running spans with five-targets shooting at regular competitive speeds. The article presents design options for the running practice loads at the basic, special precompetitive and competitive training stages within the annual training cycle. The proposed method was proved efficient as verified by the competitive accomplishments of the national Russian team leaders in the combined and relay events at the top-ranking international competitions in modern pentathlon.
