Relevance of the study. Modern military equipment requires less personnel for maintenance and operation, but, on the other hand, the level of coherence of personnel (or a crew) should be high [3]. Moreover, the increasing use of simulators and various computer "imitation programs" in specialist training leads to reduction of physical activity.

The above factors are not fully taken into account in existing training programs and as a result of that the level of physical fitness of graduates doesn't meet the requirements of military training and has no significant impact on the program mastering process [1, 2, 4].

One of the possible ways to increase the effectiveness of personnel training with the means and methods of physical training is using the competition method (sports competitions) during physical training sessions [5, 6].

Objective of the research was to develop and experimentally justify the efficiency of application of the competition method (sports competitions) during physical training in military sport universities.

Methods and structure of the research. We used theoretical analysis, generalization of literature and documentary sources, control tests, professional competency rating method, research of physical and psychological condition of military personnel, and educational experiments. The studies were conducted at the premises of the District Training Centre of the Western Military District. The total number of surveyed military personnel (cadets) – 162 people.

The educational experiment was conducted during the period from 15 February to 1 May 2015. Three reference groups were training according to the current physical training program and three study groups – according to the author's program, which was based on the application of the competition method at the final stage of training.

Results and discussion. The competition method (sport competitions) is used to create untypical - not pre-conditioned - situations and actions against the background of increased emotional component, that brings the exercising conditions to real combat and makes for the more complete training of military personnel with the use of diverse physical and mental stresses.

As a result of the use of our physical training program, based on the application of the competition method, during all forms of physical training the military personnel of the study groups showed significant improvement of the functional state of the central nervous system (CNS), physical development, functional state and physical fitness compared to those from the reference groups (Table 1).

Conclusions. The application of the competition method in the physical training process significantly makes training sessions more emotional, creates a necessary psychological atmosphere, brings a motivational component in physical exercises and makes the people involved more cohesive; it is the most efficient way of solving the problems of improvement of professionally important physical qualities of soldiers and cohesion of military groups.

Abstract
The article applies to the studies of the possibility of using the competition method during physical training activities in the final phase of training of cadets - associates of Land Force training centers. The work considers the effect of the competition method (competitions and events) on the effectivization of physical training methods offered by the author by improving the emotional, motivational component, creating the necessary psychological background in the classroom and abnormal situations, as well as by uniting military collectives.
The results of the educational experiment carried out at the premises of the District Training Centre of the Western Military District, confirming the effectiveness of using the competition method, are stipulated in the paper.
