Introduction. The patriotism of athletes serves as a guide for citizens in forming civic identity and the social solidarity of communities. Athletes who have achieved recognition and success and moved abroad cannot be perceived as patriots of the country to be looked up to, as they have shown disrespect to the coaches who invested their effort and knowledge in them, and disrespect to the country that organized the conditions and opportunities for the development of their skills [1]. On this basis, the image of the state is formed.
Objective of the study: to study the assessment of the level of patriotism among athletes in the context of forming the image of Russia at the international level.
Methods and organization of the study. The survey involved 800 athletes from various sports disciplines aged 18 to 35 years, of whom 55% were female and 45% were male. Respondents were identified through sports federations across different regions of the country. The results were processed using the SPSS software package.
Results of the study and their discussion. Among the surveyed athletes, only 63% consider themselves patriots, 4% found it difficult to answer, and 33% do not consider themselves patriots and would like to leave the country.
Patriotically minded athletes feel pride in their country (37%), a sense of gratitude (33%), and inner joy from the fact that they can represent Russia (30%). They are united by the fact that they had and have the opportunity to realize their sports talents.
It should be clarified that these same feelings (pride, gratitude, joy) toward their team are experienced by only 35% of athletes, and toward their coach – by 45%. These athletes have strong collectivist values. The remaining 20% consider their achievements rather as a personal contribution: while experiencing patriotic feelings toward the country, they believe that they were able to achieve victories on their own with minimal participation from the team and the coach's role (forming individualistic orientations).
Patriots oriented toward collectivist values would not like to migrate to other countries for permanent residence and further sports careers. Those patriots who value an individualistic mindset in their victories to a greater extent would like to live abroad for some time (to get the opportunity for better training conditions, higher earnings, formation of a social sports reputation, etc.). They would be satisfied with migration not to just any country, and only under clearly understood and accepted conditions of a sports contract.
Those who do not consider themselves patriots would like to migrate from the country at the first available opportunity. For them, the opportunity to migrate is seen as the best scenario for their own lives. They see their main professional sports successes not in Russia. The value of the coach and the team is minimal – no more than 10%. In 99% of cases, they consider their achievements to be solely personal merits.
Conclusions. The patriotic mindset and migration orientations of athletes are indicators of the level of patriotism and the peculiarities of its cultivation during the training process. We believe that the key role in forming patriotic values belongs to coaches. For a third of young athletes, this work turned out to be either insufficient or unconvincing, because their inclination to migrate from Russia indicates dissatisfaction with the opportunities available in the country and an unwillingness to independently create sports priorities in the future. For them, it is easier to leave in the hope that another country will open up more prospects for their sports realization.
