Abstract

Objective of the study is to assess the dynamics of the physical development of first-year young men who have begun systematic freestyle wrestling classes. Methods and structure of the study. 28 first-year young men aged 17-18, who had not previously had experience of systematic engagement in sport and were classified, according to the results of the initial testing, into the group with a low level of physical development, took part in the scientific work. All the participants were clinically healthy. From their number, an observation group (n=13) was formed, which over the course of 9 months attended training sessions in a freestyle wrestling section twice a week with a duration of not less than 1.5 hours each. The remaining students (n=15) made up the control group and led the lifestyle usual for students with a high involvement in study, limiting themselves only to the irregular attendance of the obligatory physical culture classes at the university. Results and conclusions. Freestyle wrestling classes contributed to the growth of the physical fitness of the first-year students. The students who had begun regular freestyle wrestling training demonstrated an increase of the results in the tests of the pull-up, the push-up, the shuttle run, the long jump and the raising of the trunk. Classes in a freestyle wrestling section ensure a significant increase in the physical capabilities of first-year students, exceeding the level of the physical capabilities of their peers attending only physical culture classes at the university, which makes it expedient to more widely recommend this kind of sporting activity in the student environment.
