Abstract

Objective of the study is to examine the phenomenon of sport from the position of the construction of the conceptual apparatus and to substantiate the dialectic of the interrelation of the diversification and universalisation of this concept. Methods and structure of the study. The methodological vector of the study was determined: from the analysis of sport as a many-sided phenomenon to the identification of the invariant features constituting the core of the concept, and further to the question of the possibility of the universalisation of the terminological consolidation. Results and conclusions. The movement from the diversification to the universalisation of the concept of ‘sport’ reflects the dialectic of scientific cognition, from empirical diversity through conceptual comprehension to a synthesis that holds this diversity in unity. The task of the researcher consists not in making a choice between diversification and universalisation as mutually exclusive alternatives, but in holding their dialectical unity by means of a working formulation relevant to the modern state of sporting activity. The very concept of sport can be built up as an open but internally ordered system, preserving its invariant core of features and adaptive to external social changes.
