Abstract
Objective of the study is to identify the possibilities of distributing students of a special medical group into functional classes using the assessment of the physical condition index (PCI) according to E.A. Pirogova. Methods and structure of the study. The scientific work was conducted in the autumn period of the 2025-2026 academic year. The object of the study was the students of a special educational department who, according to the results of medical monitoring, had been assigned to a special medical group. Two methods were used in the work: the assessment of the physical condition index according to E.A. Pirogova and the assessment of physical working capacity using a step test. 134 students were examined: 63 men and 71 women. Results and conclusions. The analysis of the results shows that the division of students into functional groups according to the results of the PCI assessment can lead to an error in determining the permissible limits of physical load. The use of load testing is more justified. Its results showed that 60% of the students have a ‘low’ and ‘below average’ level of physical working capacity. The ‘high’ and ‘above average’ levels include students who have a temporary restriction or are in the stage of remission; they engage in additional training 2-3 times a week. They may be recommended a repeated medical examination in order to change the medical group. When conducting classes with students of a special educational department on the basis of a functional approach, one should take into account the limits of the permissible physical load according to the results of step ergometry and analyse the main and additional diagnoses of the students.
