Introduction. The modern development of the physical culture and sports sphere in China places increased demands on the managerial qualifications of specialists working in sports organizations at various levels [1, 2]. In these conditions, additional professional education as a mechanism for the targeted development of managerial skills among working specialists becomes particularly relevant.
Objective of the study. To test and evaluate the effectiveness of a specially developed professional development program aimed at forming managerial competencies among specialists in the field of physical culture and sports in Henan Province.
Methodology and organization of the study. The pedagogical experiment was conducted on the basis of the Professional Development Institute of Henan University from March to July 2025, with the participation of 40 specialists working in the field of physical culture and sports in various positions: heads of sports schools, managers of sports facilities, and employees of municipal sports committees of Henan Province. To diagnose managerial competencies, the following were used: standardized testing on the fundamentals of management (0–30 points), solving management cases (result as a percentage of the maximum, 0–100%), and a self-assessment scale of managerial competencies (average score on a 5-point scale).
Results of the study and discussion. At the formative stage, training in the control group was carried out according to a traditional professional development program with an emphasis on updating theoretical knowledge in the field of physical culture, where practical tasks performed a predominantly illustrative function. In the experimental group, the developed innovative program "Modern Aspects of Management in the Field of Physical Culture and Sports" was introduced, characterized by three key features: a practice-oriented focus with an emphasis on analyzing real cases from the practice of sports organizations in Henan Province; interdisciplinarity through the integration of modules on sports marketing, financial management, personnel management, and project activities; and the use of interactive formats, including business games, master classes with invited expert practitioners, and project work in which participants developed specific proposals for optimizing the work of their organizations.
The final diagnostic assessment revealed a different profile of changes in the two groups. In the control group, moderate growth was recorded on the test indicator (Me=19) and a slight improvement in case-solving results (Me=60%). The self-assessment of competencies in the control group remained almost unchanged (Me=3.3). In the experimental group, a significantly more pronounced increase was observed across all three indicators: the test result was 22 points, the case-solving result reached 74%, and the self-assessment of managerial competencies increased to 3.7 points.
Conclusion. The conducted pedagogical experiment confirmed that the formation of managerial competencies among specialists in the field of physical culture and sports is most effective within the framework of additional professional education programs built on the principles of practice-orientation and interdisciplinarity.
