Objective of the study is to identify the pedagogical conditions for fostering the readiness of future physical education and sports specialists for professional and personal self-development, and to experimentally validate their effectiveness.
Methods and structure of the study. Analysis and synthesis of the literature on the research problem, analysis of regulatory documents, analysis of the author’s own long-standing pedagogical experience, and the results of a descriptive experiment (458 first- to third-year students at P.F. Lesgaft University, specialising in ‘Sport’) enabled us to develop, theoretically substantiate and, in the course of a formative experiment (n=30), verify the effectiveness of pedagogical conditions for fostering students’ readiness for professional and personal self-development. The experimental work was carried out at the Department of Pedagogy, Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health, St Petersburg.
Results and conclusions. It has been established that, within the framework of implementing a competence-based approach in physical education, one of the outcomes of completing educational programmes in the ‘Physical Education’ ‘Sport’ is the development of students’ self-development competence. The pedagogical conditions for the formation of the value-motivational, cognitive, activity-based and reflective components of students’ readiness for professional and personal self-development have been identified. The results of experimental teaching of a number of pedagogical disciplines and a formative experiment involving 30 students demonstrate the effectiveness of the identified pedagogical conditions.

Keywords: professional and personal self-development, pedagogical conditions for the formation of readiness for self-development, students of a university of physical education, educational process.
