Objective of the study is to develop speed and strength qualities by applying additional exercises in the process of preparing students to pass the standards.
Methods and structure of the study. 100 Don State Technical University students aged 17 to 22 took part in the experiment. The initial level of speed and strength exercises of the control and experimental groups of students was assessed. The following tests were used for this purpose: 100-metre run, long jump (from a standing position and with a run-up), high jump with a run-up, shuttle run.
Results and conclusions. Based on theoretical and methodological studies by other authors, a complex was developed to improve the speed-strength abilities of students, which includes jumping ‘from foot to foot’ along a gymnastic bench, jumping over an obstacle on two legs, jumping rope, jumping in place with a weight throw from the sternum, and shuttle running. The results of applying this complex showed positive dynamics in the experimental group for all test exercises: from 2.9% to 7.5% over three months.

Keywords: speed and strength abilities, physical culture, physical training of students.
