Objective of the study is to identify the significance and role of physical culture and sport in the patriotic education of young students in the context of modern higher education institutions.
Methods and structure of the study. An analysis of works devoted to the problem of the significance and role of physical culture and sport in education was carried out, normative documents were studied, the results of sociologists and questionnaire data from Russian universities were examined, and an analysis of the protocols of intermediate testing of control standards for 1st-3rd year students at the faculties of psychology, biology and ecology at P.G. Demidov Yaroslavl State University.
Results and conclusions. The successful realisation of the potential of physical culture in patriotic education is only possible with a comprehensive approach that includes interaction between the university administration, teachers and student leaders. This contributes to the formation of a harmoniously developed personality with an active civic position and a high level of patriotic consciousness.
