Objective of the study is to identify the impact of mass ski marathons on the development of ski racing in Russia and worldwide.
Methods and structure of the study. A theoretical analysis and summary of scientific and methodological literature and data from specialised websites was conducted.
Results and conclusions. Over the past hundred years, the system of organising and conducting competitions in mass ski marathons and ultra-marathons has largely determined the main directions of development and influenced the popularity of ski racing in the world. Since the mid-1970s, annual mass ski marathons and ultra-marathons have become not only an integral part of the international competitive season in ski racing, but also a form of mass sports movement among the population in many countries of Europe and North America. Currently, about three hundred mass ski marathons are held annually around the world, with 110-120 thousand people participating. The movement of mass ski marathons and ultra-marathons has also become a noticeable phenomenon in the sporting life of Russia.
