Introduction. As part of the VII All-Russian Sociological Congress "Sociology and Society: the formation and functioning of public Memory", a section on the topic "Sociology of Physical Culture and Sports" was held at the P.F. Lesgaft National University on November 14, 2025. The section was attended by leading scientists and experts in the fields of sociology, pedagogy, philosophy, history and political science. The section was headed by Doctor of Social Sciences, Professor S.I. Rosenko and Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor V.V. Pyzh.
The purpose of the study is to reveal the potential of the sociological congress in the context of highlighting the problems of formation and functioning of public memory.
The results of the study and their discussion. The discussion began with a report by S.I. Rosenko, Doctor of Sociology, Professor (P.F. Lesgaft National University) on the modern parameters of higher education in the field of physical culture and sports, which noted a high level of student involvement in educational and pedagogical sciences, as well as in the humanities, but less interest in the sciences of society and sciences related to art and culture.
The following report by PhD, Associate Professor K.K. Ohanyan (P.F. Lesgaft National University), based on the results of a sociological survey, shows how the educational process pays attention to improving the forms and methods of civic and patriotic education in the field of physical culture and sports. The presentation of the Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor N.A. Karmaev (P.F. Lesgaft National University) on the value of social cohesion as a key aspect of sports and physical culture" was devoted to the problem of the formation of social cohesion in the context of sports and physical culture. The speaker presented the results of sociological research showing the level of youth participation in sports and physical activity in the period from 1996 to 2021. As a result, the author came to the conclusion that there is a decline in activity in many areas or its stagnation.
An interesting controversy was caused by the report of Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Associate Professor M.V. Sinyutin (St. Petersburg State University) and Candidate of Sociological Sciences A.S. Gonashvili (St. Petersburg State Technical University)) on the topic "On the importance of Marxism in the history of Russian sociology of sports." The authors concluded that the Russian sociology of sports continues to be influenced by Soviet traditions, despite the growing popularity of post-Marxist approaches, forming an understanding of capitalist trends in modern sports.
Conclusions. The section of the Sociological Congress helped expand the boundaries of scientific discussion among scientists and specialists about the role of public memory in shaping national and cultural identity, maintaining social ties, and shaping the "image of the future" of physical culture and sports.
