Objective of the study is to determine the prevalence of hyperactivity and factors influencing its manifestation among 10-11-year-old students in ten schools in Ulaanbaatar.
Methods and structure of the study. In 2018, data was collected from guardians of 2,046 children aged 10–11 in ten schools in Ulaanbaatar using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Based on the scores obtained, hyperactivity was classified as normal, borderline, and abnormal. A statistical analysis of the relationship between hyperactivity and socio-economic and behavioural factors was conducted.
Results and conclusions. Hyperactivity was identified in 18.7% of children (n=382), with boys predominating (66%, p<0.0001). Children who did not attend sports clubs, spent a lot of time in front of screens, and did not participate in household chores demonstrated a significantly higher risk of hyperactive behaviour. Such children had lower academic performance in mathematics and the Mongolian language (p<0.0001).
Hyperactivity is more common in boys and is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as high screen time and low physical activity. Raising parental awareness, encouraging participation in sports clubs, and involving children in daily physical activities are important for promoting mental health among children in Mongolia.
Keywords: adolescence, hyperactivity, health, lifestyle.
