Objective of the study is to identify the qualitative uniqueness of the use of illustrations reflecting the phenomenon of unarmed combat in didactic illustrations in foreign primers.
Methods and structure of the study. The empirical sources of the study are materials published in 82 foreign alphabets between 1990 and 2024. To demonstrate the genesis of illustrations of this kind, materials from a German alphabet published in 1830 were used.
Results and conclusions. Based on a multi-choice cross-sectional approach using theoretical research methods, conclusions have been drawn that national martial arts are not represented in European publications, unlike the types of wrestling cultivated in countries with a predominantly Turkic population. There is a slight tendency to take into account the need to implement the concept of tolerance, which is reflected in the presentation of a number of plots using animal images. This relieves authors and illustrators of the need to reflect the ethno-specific features of the characters' appearance and their nationality.
