Objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of certain nutraceuticals among female students attending elective physical education courses at university.
Methods and structure of the study. 60 female students in their first and second years who did not systematically engage in physical education or sports participated in the scientific study. In group 1 (n=15), the subjects took polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and vitamin E, 1 capsule per day. In group 2 (n=15), they took branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) at a dose of 1 capsule twice a day. In group 3 (n=15), they took PUFA and vitamin E (1 capsule per day) together with BCAA (1 capsule twice a day). The duration of supplementation was 90 days. The girls in the control group (group 0, n=15) did not take any supplements during the study. During the observation period, anthropometric data, impedance measurements, physiological and laboratory tests were evaluated.
Results and conclusions. It was found that in test groups 2 and 3, after completing the course of nutraceuticals, there was a statistically significant (p<0.05) increase in left hand strength relative to baseline values. In group 1, the vital capacity of the lungs after taking nutraceuticals increased significantly relative to baseline values by 6.6% (p<0.05). In groups 2 and 3, after taking the nutraceuticals, a significant (p<0.05) increase in skeletal muscle mass of 12.8% and 4.3%, respectively, was noted relative to the values of group 0. In test groups 1 and 3, after completing the course of nutraceuticals, the total protein content in blood serum increased.
