Objective of the study is to comprehensively assess and compare the development indicators of core Olympic sports at the Sports School and Sports School of Olympic Reserve in Ekaterinburg, compared to cities with over a million people, by 2024 to identify best practices and problem areas.
Methods and structure of the study. The study was based on official statistical reporting data (Form 5-FK) for 2024, provided by sports schools in nine cities with over a million residents. Comparative, structural, and statistical analysis methods were used. Quantitative and qualitative indicators were analyzed, including the network of institutions, student population, financial support, and athletic training results. Leading cities in each area were identified, and key factors influencing the effectiveness of athletic reserve training were determined.
Results and conclusions. A comparative analysis of the development of core Olympic sports in Ekaterinburg and other cities with over a million inhabitants revealed significant differences in the development of sports training systems in Russia's largest cities. These findings indicate that there is no universal model for success. The effectiveness of sports reserve training depends on a combination of factors: financial security, the region's historically established sports specializations, and management effectiveness. To improve the situation and enhance the overall competitiveness of Russian sports, it is advisable to share best practices between regions and develop targeted support measures for lagging areas.
