Successes and horizons of development of the department of physical education and sports and public work at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia

Objective of the study is a methodological substantiation of the socio-didactic impulses for the development of physical education at Herzen University.
Methods and structure of the study. Archival materials on the history of physical education at the university have been studied, historical and archival documents have been analyzed, as well as abstracts of reports by staff of the A.I. Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University for various periods. In addition, the memoirs of eyewitnesses of events that took place at the Department of Physical Education and in the sports field of the university were used, and a review of publications in periodicals was conducted.
Results and conclusions. The Herzen University emphasizes the versatility of the approach to the physical development of students, reflected in the variety of tasks of teacher training for schools. The contradictions of the current system of physical education act as catalysts for progress at the department and the strengthening of its influence in the formation of a universal teacher.
