Objective of the study is to examine the historical experience of traditional winter sports competitions "Prasdnik Severa" in Murmansk during the Great Patriotic War.
Methodology and structure of the study. Based on the study of periodicals from 1942-1945, as well as sources of personal origin (memoirs, diaries), the features of the organization and dynamics of the development of programm of winter sports competitions "Prasdnik Severa" in the conditions of proximity to the front are considered.
Research and conclusions. The Great Patriotic War made its own adjustments to the celebration of the North, but did not break it. The winter sports competition program has been updated, but skiing has remained in the spotlight. The holiday united civilians and military, representatives of different regions, in a common quest for victory. Some of the competitions were directly related to military training. Hundreds of athletes who went through the Celebration of the North contributed to the defense of the Motherland at the front and in the rear. Despite the destruction and bombing of Murmansk, the Holiday of the North continued to develop, demonstrating fortitude and faith in victory, as well as confirming the importance of sports and physical culture to strengthen the country's defense.
