Introduction. Currently, there is a revival of cultural heritage and the popularization of national sports games, such as lapta. This is a national sport that promotes physical development, fosters team spirit, strengthens morality and patriotism, and is used as a means of human development for work and social life.
The purpose of this study is to identify the motivation of students to play the national sport of lapta.
Research methodology and organization. An online questionnaire was developed, which included multiple-choice questions. A total of 604 respondents (young men and women aged 16 to 25) participated in the survey.
Research results and their discussion. According to the results of a socio-pedagogical survey, only 40.2% of the respondents were familiar with lapta as part of the Physical Education discipline. 53.7% of the respondents did not study the national sport at all, which suggests that the Russian folk team game lapta does not have a significant place in the curriculum of Physical Education in secondary and higher education institutions.
The level of involvement in the training process for the team game "Lapta" as part of extracurricular activities was expectedly low. The respondents who answered "Yes, once a week" were 7.6%, "Yes, 2-3 times a week" were 5.1%, "Yes, more than three times a week" were 4%, and 83.3% of the respondents did not engage in the sport at all, indicating a low level of development in the student sports environment.
16.6% of those who took part in the survey expressed a desire to participate in the lapta section, 28.5% of respondents expressed doubts about their desire to participate, 39.1% of respondents expressed a lack of interest, and 15.8% of respondents found it difficult to answer this question.
Among the students who practice lapta in the sections, we studied the motivation for sports activities using the A. V. Shabaltas method and the "Motivation to Achieve Goals and Avoid Failures" method by T. Ehlers. These methods are aimed at determining the main goals of sports activities and diagnosing the motivational orientation of an individual.
According to the results of the survey "Motives for playing sports", it was revealed that the most significant among young men are: the motive for achieving success in sports – 17.8%, the motive for preparing for professional activity – 16.9% and the motive for physical self–affirmation - 16.1%. Among girls: the motive of emotional pleasure is 18%, the socio‑emotional motive is 15.8% and the motive for achieving success in sports is 14.4%.
The least significant motives for young men and women are social and moral (young men – 6.6%, young women – 6.4%) and sports and educational (young men – 7%, young women – 4.7%) motives.
The study of "Motivation to achieve goals and avoid failures" showed that for boys, the most significant motivation to avoid failures was 17%, and for girls, motivation to achieve goals was 17.2%.
It should be noted that the differences in motivation between boys and girls may be related to the emotional perception of success and failure, upbringing, as well as the role of physical culture and sports in their lives.
Conclusions. As a result of the conducted research, it can be stated that about 20% of students show interest in lapta. Therefore, it is necessary to include lapta in the content of elective courses in the discipline of Physical Education and in sectional work in educational institutions, as a national sport with great developmental potential.
