Objective of the study was to  specific sociological analysis of the state of development and prospects for the development of the direction of the sociology of physical education and sports in the activities of sociological associations, societies and publications.
Methods and structure of the study. A pilot specific sociological study was conducted, including a content analysis of information sources devoted to covering the activities of sociological associations, societies and publications.
Results and conclusions. Based on the results of the specific sociological study, it was revealed that to date, the sociology of physical education and sports in the activities of the above sociological associations, societies and publications as one of the directions is developed only by a certain division and is permanently represented only in the International Sociological Association and the Russian Society of Sociologists. There is not a single sociological journal in the list of the studied rating sociological and anthropological publications. Taking into account all of the above, it can be stated that in the global scientific and sociological discourse and professional sociological community, Russia has a chance to occupy a virtually free niche in promoting sociological research in the field of physical education and sports by creating a sociological institute and a scientific publication on the problems of physical education and sports.
