Objective of the study was to  determination of the potential and degree of influence of the national (ethnic) component of physical education disciplines on the formation of a unified civic identity of young people, the state of spiritual and moral education and intercultural communications, as well as the level of awareness of students about national sports and cultural and ethnic games of the peoples of the Russian Federation.
Methods and structure of the study. A survey was conducted in the form of an anonymous online poll of 307 students from universities in various regions of Russia; a survey of 50 undergraduate and specialist students from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics was also conducted in the form of an anonymous online poll. In order to identify opportunities for developing national (ethnic) components of sports disciplines in the process of implementing the subject «Physical education», an analysis of the work programs of comprehensive schools and universities in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation with both mono-ethnic and multi-ethnic populations was carried out.
Results and conclusions. Modernization of work programs on physical education in schools and universities of Russia by including in their content components of national (ethnic) sports and games of the peoples of Russia, as well as systematic integration of teaching physical education into the cycle of academic subjects focused on the study of national culture, history and literature, ethnocultural characteristics and traditions of the peoples of the Russian Federation, will lead to an increase in the level of awareness of students in the field of forming a unified civil identity of young people.
