Objective of the study was to substantiate the possibilities of using the backbone role of a useful result in the mechanisms of information support for the management of sports training of highly qualified hockey players.
Methods and structure of the study. The theoretical substantiation of the problem of management in sports was carried out from the standpoint of the methodology of functional systems. This paper summarizes the empirical results of complex studies of various aspects of sports training of highly skilled hockey players.
Results and conclusions. Management is considered as a complex interdisciplinary activity, implying a dense interweaving of theoretical concepts and aimed at the practical solution of the problems of sports training of highly qualified hockey players. As a result of the study, the properties and relationships of the subject areas that make up the directions of this activity in relation to the sports training of highly qualified hockey players are determined. As a "conceptual bridge" between subject areas, the theory of functional systems by P.K. Anokhin, in particular, its key element is the concept of a backbone factor. The study substantiates the need to develop a multi-level model for managing a hockey team.

Keywords: management, highly skilled hockey players, functional systems, interdisciplinary approach, backbone factor.
