Objective of the study was to substantiate, develop a program and methodological support of a sports-specific orientation in the physical education of university students and test its effectiveness in a pedagogical experiment.
Methods and structure of the study. The pedagogical research was carried out at the Siberian State University of Science and Technology named after academician M.F. Reshetnev from 2018 to 2022. An experimental group of 35 students and a control group of 40 students were formed by random sampling. In the course of the study, the program and methodological support of the sports and species orientation in the physical education of university students was substantiated, developed and tested on the basis of summer triathlon classes. The sports-species orientation in the physical education of university students is defined as the students' chosen kind of sport, which corresponds to their physical abilities and motivates them for physical culture and sports activities during their studies at the university, with the subsequent design of sports readiness into their future professional and social and social life.
Results and conclusions. In the course of scientific work, the classic summer triathlon was adjusted for students, where the following types of competitions were defined for young men: running - 3 km, swimming - 200 m, cycling - 10 km; for girls: running - 2 km, swimming - 100 m, cycling - 5 km.
The conducted experiment showed the high efficiency of the sports-species orientation in the physical education of university students.
