Objective of the study was to identify the main elements of the Russian system of social protection of athletes: compulsory social insurance; voluntary insurance.
Methods and structure of the study. In the course of scientific work, an analysis of the Russian regulatory framework in the field of sportsmen's insurance was carried out, as well as the results of a sociological study devoted to assessing the level of knowledge of professional athletes about sports insurance, its capabilities and features. The sample size was 625 citizens of the Russian Federation who are professional athletes and work in Russia at the time of the study, aged 18 to 40 years.
Results and conclusions. The analysis of compulsory and voluntary insurance of athletes revealed a number of problems, the main of which is the imperfection of the legislative framework. There is no clear system of paperwork for the timely receipt of insurance payments. Recently, professional sports have become younger, while the issue of compulsory insurance of underage athletes has not been sufficiently developed. It is necessary to make changes to the rules for voluntary insurance of Russian national teams, not only insurance for professional athletes and coaching staff, but also for young athletes from Olympic reserve schools.

Keywords: sportsmen's insurance, insurance program, insurance risks.
