Objective of the study was to study the ideas of students of Moscow universities about the rational sleep regimen and its impact on the success of the educational activities of young people.
Methods and structure of the study. The focus of research interest was to identify the dependence of sleep time, its regularity and periodicity on the student's high-quality fulfillment of the curriculum and his absence from classes due to illness. For this, a specific sociological study "Physical culture and sports in the life of students of a metropolis" was carried out, implemented under the guidance of E.V. Kargapolova in October 2019 using an online survey (N=2503) in Moscow.
Results and conclusions. Academic performance and attendance depends on sleep patterns. An eight-hour sleep period per night and bedtime no later than 11 pm has a positive effect on learning success and reduced absenteeism. And, on the contrary, obvious sleep disturbances are observed in students who have academic debts and miss more than ten school days due to illness. A more responsible attitude to the sleep regimen is declared by young men and senior students. Most of the respondents understand the importance of eight hours of sleep, but underestimate the importance of going to bed at the time recommended by doctors. There is also a contradiction between the understanding of the importance of the sleep regimen and self-preserving practices: less than half of the respondents observe the sleep regimen. Thus, the results of the study confirmed that adequate sleep is one of the necessary components not only for maintaining health, but also for successful studies at a university.
