Methods and structure of the study. For the development of physical abilities, a methodology was developed for conducting independent work of students in physical culture and sports using orientation schemes in the form of reference maps (RM) and reference tables (RT). The experimental methodology was applied as part of the discipline "Physical Culture and Sports" for first-year students of the Irkutsk State Transport University during 2020-2021.
Results and conclusions.  Students enrolled in 2020 and studying according to the experimental method showed an increase in strength abilities by the end of the academic year. The introduction of orientation schemes made it possible to reach the previous indicators of the increase in the standard for young men who studied in the classroom at least twice a week during the year.
The proposed methodology can be used in organizing students' independent activities, both within the framework of studying the discipline "Physical Culture and Sports", and throughout the future life of university graduates to maintain their own physical health, success in their professional activities.
