Introduction. In 2022, the Department of Gymnastics, one of the leading divisions of the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism (RSUFKSMiT), celebrates its 90th anniversary.
The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the formation and development of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Gymnastics of the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism (GTSOLIFK) in the aspect of historical analysis.
The results of the study and their discussion. The Department of Gymnastics was founded in 1932 . Its first head was an experienced teacher and organizer S. N. Lunevsky.
In the pre-war period, the staff of the department actively created a scientific and methodological base of the sports direction "gymnastics", M.L. Ukran defends the world's first dissertation on anatomical and biomechanical analysis of the handstand
During its 90‑year existence, the Department of Gymnastics has undergone changes in its structure. In 1961, within the framework of the cathedral concept, the specialization "Rhythmic Gymnastics" was formed, headed by V. G. Modzalevskaya and M. G. Novik. In 1972, under the leadership of Yu. A. Popov, the specialization "Acrobatics" was created, later, thanks to the active work of T. S. Lisitskaya, the specialization "Aerobics and fitness Gymnastics" was opened.
Currently, the department trains specialists in sports: sports, artistic and aesthetic gymnastics, sports acrobatics, trampoline jumping, acrobatic rock and roll, air-power athletics, sports and fitness aerobics, sports yoga, as well as in the profile "Physical culture and fitness activities and fitness", conducts research work covering all sports and health-improving types of gymnastics.
Under the scientific guidance of leading specialists A.M. Shlemin, M. L. Ukran, Yu. K. Gaverdovsky, L. P. Semenov, V. M. Smolevsky, A.V. Menkhin, T. S. Lisitskaya, E. Yu. Rosina, A. B. Lagutina, M. Yu. Rostovtseva, L. A. Novikova have trained more than 200 candidates of sciences, five doctors of pedagogical sciences.
The scientific and methodological activities of teachers and graduate students of the department are reflected in numerous publications. Over 30 textbooks on sports and rhythmic gymnastics, on the subject of "Physical culture" for secondary schools, a number of monographs, several thousand articles of a scientific and methodological nature have been published by the specialists of the division in different years.
The Department of Gymnastics is proud of its graduates, renowned masters, winners and prize-winners of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships, including: E.Mukhina, L.Petrik, A.Mustafina, M.Voronin, V.Markelov, Y.Kryukov, V.Makarsky, E.Barsukova, E.Shalamova, V.Shimanskaya, E.Selezneva.
Conclusion. The authority of the gymnastics department has been won by many generations of excellent teachers who have creatively developed creative and methodical ways of mastering gymnastics in sports and wellness areas.
