Introduction. Currently, Olympic sport, subject to various contradictions, actualizes the problem of finding ways to preserve its basic values, which were laid down by Pierre de Coubertin [1, 2].
The purpose of the study is to assess the depth of changes in Olympic values in the modern sports movement based on the results of a sociological survey of students of a sports university.
Methodology and organization of the study. 141 students of the Smolensk State University of Sports took part in the sociological survey (from the 1st to the 4th year, 51% of girls, 49% of boys; 72% have a sports category). The time of the study is November–December 2021.
The results of the study and their discussion. In the course of the conducted sociological analysis, it was found that, according to the students, the Olympic and sports movement is currently undergoing quite profound changes.
In particular, more than half of the respondents note the modern commercialization of sports. The results of the answers to the questions concerning the political influence on the development and popularization of Olympic values and the preservation of the humanistic potential of sport indicate that sport has indeed become quite politicized and, unfortunately, sports ethics are not always observed by athletes at sports competitions.
Along with this, in modern society there is a modification of the values of Olympism, associated primarily with the general changes in the value system of our society. This indicates the need to change the educational system of a sports university, in which the educational process would be aimed at preserving and popularizing the values of the modern Olympic movement in accordance with the idea of Pierre de Coubertin. To date, such academic disciplines as "Olympic education: theory and methodology" and "Current problems of international sports Olympism" are taught at the SSUS, during the development of which students gain relevant knowledge and form an idea of the Olympic movement and the values of Olympism.
Conclusion. The prospect of humanizing the modern Olympic movement is to resolve the contradictions between the modern transformation of Olympic values and the philosophy of Olympism by developing an ethical doping code, strengthening the rules for allowing transgender people to participate in the Olympic Games, reducing the level of politicization, commercialization, professionalization of Olympic sports and creating an educational system to strengthen and develop Olympic values.
