Impact of historical information about unique achievements of Russian athletes on students’ motivation for sports

Abstract

Objective of the study was to determine the influence of historical data on the unique achievements of the Russian athletes on the formation of students’ motivation for sports activities.

Methods and structure of the study. The study was carried out from September 2020 through June 2021 at the Russian Open Transport Academy of Moscow State University of Transport. During the study, we interviewed 270 first-year students majoring in History and Physical Education and Sports. During the practical History classes the subjects were presented data on the extraordinary sports achievements of Russian athletes: the unique victory of first Olympic champion of the USSR in boxing V.K. Safronov at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games, and the sensational victory of skier V.P. Vedinin at the Sapporo 1972 Olympic Winter Games). After analyzing the historical facts, the students were asked to answer the questionnaire to determine how this information had influenced their motivation for sports activities.

Results and conclusions. The findings demonstrated the exquisite degree of influence of the historical data on the unique achievements of the Russian athletes on the students’ motivation for sports activities.
