Objective of the study was to demonstrate the possibility and necessity of using adaptive gymnastics means when recovering damaged functions and body systems after a stroke.
Methods and structure of the study. The study on stroke recovery was carried out in six in-patient centers of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region from 2014 to 2019.
Results and conclusions. The Experimental Group patients were found to have positive changes in the affected movements, with statistically significantly higher rates than in CG (p<0.05-0.01). The analysis of the level of development of physical qualities revealed notable improvements in the adaptive recovery period only. Household activities were found to improve from the first recovery period to the adaptive period. In assessing the state of the cognitive functions, it was found that the short-term memory span was preserved in all the examined patients; the non-uniformity of possible maintenance of attention span after stroke, as well as the cognitive processes of this category of patients, present difficulties in more complex tasks only. The means and methods of recovery of communicative functions, which are based on the use of physical exercises in home post-stroke rehabilitation, contributed to the improvement in speech, visual function, and auditory sense to the extent targeted by adaptive gymnastics.

Keywords: adaptive gymnastics, physical rehabilitation, principles, gain of motion method, cognitive and communicative functions, psychoemotional state.
