Objective of the study was to assess the functional state of professional basketball players based on the analysis of heart rate variability in the competitive period.
Methods and structure of the study. Sampled for the study were 12 professional basketball players of CBA (China Basketball Association). The mean age of the athletes was 27.67±3.45 years. Their function state rates were monitored using the automated diagnostic complex "Cardio+". The heart rate variability rates were recorded at rest. The integrated functional state indicator was defined based on the following indicators for the comprehensive assessment: heart rate regulation, myocardial condition, psycho-emotional state, and cardiac disorders. The study was conducted at the premises of Xinjiang Basketball Club, Urumchi, China.
Results and conclusions. It was found that 6 out of 12 professional basketball players have a high functional fitness level. The integrated indicator of the heart rate regulation, indicating the predominance of the vegetative type of regulation, as well as the onset of fatigue, incomplete recovery of the athletes, was above average in the vast majority of the basketball players surveyed. 8 professional basketball players were tested with the sympathotonic type of heart rate regulation, and 4 – with the vagotonic type. All athletes were found to have bradycardia, with the average HR equaling 42±6.65 b·min-1 and low SI values - 21.08±10.09 p.u., which indicated the economization of functioning of the CVS of the basketball players. In addition, 8 subjects were tested with the pronounced tension of the regulatory systems related to the activation of the sympathetic-adrenal system and pituitary adrenal cortical systems. 2 basketball players had a moderate level of tension of the regulatory systems, which is characteristic of competitive activities being a powerful stress-factor. And only 2 basketball players had an optimal level of tension of the regulatory systems. The data obtained indicated a high level of training of the basketball players, but in the competitive period, they recovered incompletely, which requires correcting the process of training and introducing means and methods to accelerate the recovery processes.
