Safety of physical education classes: sociological analysis

Objective of the study was to conduct a sociological analysis to identify the opinions of physical education teachers about the safety of the training sessions and potential risks associated with the training activities.
Methods and structure of the study. The study involved 79 physical education teachers from 17 schools. They were asked to fill out the author’s questionnaire survey form, the validity of which had been verified prior to the experiment.
Results and conclusions. The findings showed that there are numerous causes of accidents during the physical education lessons: low level of physical fitness of schoolchildren, lack of discipline, poor state of the sports facilities, and faulty sports equipment. Only one in ten participants noted a very good state of the sports equipment. Another problem is a large number of schoolchildren. One in five respondents indicated that organizational errors of the physical education teachers are among the causes of accidents.
Accidents during physical education practices result in a large number of injuries, both serious (fractures or stretches) and minor (bruises or abrasions).
The physical education teachers believe that they are familiar with the safety regulations. One in four respondents acquired this knowledge during their vocational courses and trainings.
More than 75% of the participants feared there would be an accident during the training session due to both carelessness of the schoolchildren and a mere incident.
