Psychological adaptation of foreign students to university environment based on academic physical education and sports activities

Objective of the study was to determine the degree of impact of physical education and sports-related factors on the level of academic and psychological adaptation of foreign students to the university environment in Russia.
Methods and structure of the study. The study was conducted at the FSBEI of HE "Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth, and Tourism" from September 2019 through March 2020. Sampled for the study were the bachelor’s and master’s degree students (n=22), citizens of the People’s Republic of China (n=13), Vietnam (n=5), Syria (n=2), and Brazil (n=2), who had spent equal time living in the Russian Federation and had achieved the same level of fluency in the Russian language. The following methods were used in the work: analysis of special literature, pedagogical observation, educational diagnostic and test procedures ("Self-assessment of Emotional States" (A. Wessman and D. Ricks), "Spielberger-Hanin State-Trait Anxiety Inventory", "Diagnostics of Stress Conditions" (A.O. Prokhorov) [2], mathematical statistics (Wilcoxon W-criterion, etc.).
Results and conclusions. The analysis of the factual material obtained proved the effectiveness of the application of the means and methods of physical education in working with the foreign students, which not only resulted in increased motor activity and physical fitness level but also acted as an effective tool for managing the process of their social adaptation. The socializing potential, inherent in the very nature of the physical education and sports activities, not only promotes the formation of life skills and knowledge, cultivates moral-volitional and spiritual-moral qualities, moral and value education but also acts as an exceptional factor in the adaptation of student youth to new learning and living environments.
