Objective of the study was to determine the impact of a 5-week developing mesocycle aimed to change the level of development of speed and coordination qualities in U11 young football players.
Methods and structure of the study. According to the study program, the experimental mesocycle was followed by an equal in time (5 weeks) period of load reduction, in which the athletes performed mainly in the game training sessions. The changes in the young athletes’ speed ability at the end of each mesocycle were determined by special tests: 10 m and 20 m run and running with changing directions (505 Agility Test). The statistical significance of differences in averages was determined using the Friedman non-parametric criterion and the Wilcoxon t-criterion.
Results and conclusions. The analysis of the data obtained indicated a significant improvement of the athletes’ speed qualities upon completion of the experimental training program (10 m run - p=0.026*; 20 m run - p=0.05*). In the second part of the experiment, which involved the game-oriented training, a significant improvement was observed in the speed ability level only during the speed run with changing directions (505 Agility Test - p=0.011*) and at the same time a significant decrease in the 10 m run test rates (p=0.004**). The study proved the need to include special exercises to promote the quality of speed in the game-oriented training. It is impossible to achieve the necessary level of speed qualities without such exercises. Moreover, the use of such game actions as ball dribbling, handling, capture, preparatory and special-game exercises, and mobile games is a sufficient incentive for the development of speed ability in the run with changing directions.
