Objective of the study was to determine the degree of involvement and attitudes of students towards physical self-education.
Methods and structure of the study. The following methods were applied during the study: interview and pedagogical observation. Sampled for the study were the 1st-4th-year students of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. In conducting the study, we took into account that the number of students varied (from 100 to 1,000 depending on the course), and therefore, the findings are presented as a percentage of the total number of respondents in each course.
Results and conclusions. The study found that more than half of the students in each course had a strong interest in the chosen profession. This rate slightly decreased by the 2nd and 3rd course (51 and 48%, respectively), but increased again by the 4th course (58%). This group of students was also characterized by the highest percentage of those engaged in self-education. There was a progressive trend from course to course - a decline in the number of students engaged in self-education activities. Therefore, it can be stated that the students of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering can be categorized as physically active citizens, since compulsory physical education classes are combined with independent physical education activities. However, the students' attitudes towards self-education and real involvement vary and decline towards the end of their studies. The study of the psychological and educational aspects of physical self-education (real needs, motives, interests), as well as the social factors promoting a self-education drive and the reasons that prevent it, is becoming an urgent task in the vocational training of students.
