Objective of the study was to develop and prove by experiment the effectiveness of the competitive game methodology in application to university students to increase the level of their physical fitness.
Methods and structure of the study. In the course of the experiment, two groups were formed: Experimental and Control, 30 students each, who were regularly involved in the physical education classes in the Physical Education and Sports discipline. The Control Group was involved in the work program of the academic Physical Education and Sports discipline at the university, while the Experimental Group was rained according to the experimental program, which included three main blocks which differed in their direction, content, means and methods of organization of the educational process: base-forming, educational-training, and physical education and sports specialist advancement.
Results and conclusions. The data obtained during the educational experiment indicate a significant increase in the functional state indicators and physical fitness level of the Experimental Group students (p<0.01). The competitive game methodology, which included various forms of organization of the physical education classes taking into account the students’ interests and needs, contributed to the improvement of their physical fitness level, increasing their motor activity, changing their attitude towards the Physical Education and Sports discipline, and promoting the development of a sustained interest in independent physical education and sports activities.
