Bone turnover markers in boys of Middle Ob region during sports activities

Objective of the study was to analyze the peculiarities of bone remodeling in young males of the Middle Ob region during sports activities.
Methods and structure of the study. Four groups (ages 19-20 years) were formed. Group 1 (n=8) consisted of the non-sporting young males (Control Group), Group 2 (n=8) – male racing skiers, Group 3 (n=8) – male volleyball players, Group 4 (n=8) - male boxers. The sports experience in Groups 2-4 was 7-9 years. We measured the concentrations of type I C-telopeptide (CTX-I) in the blood serum, levels of osteocalcin, calcitonin, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D 1.25(OH)2. The quantitative estimation of bone metabolic markers and hormones was performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on the BIO-TEK Instruments Inc, ELx808 (USA) analyzer using the reagent kits of IDS (immunodiagnostic systems, UK), Nordic Bioscience Diagnostics (Denmark), Diasource Immunoassays S.A. (Belgium). The study was carried out on the basis of the Khanty-Mansiysk District Clinical Hospital.
Results and conclusions. It was found that in Group 2, as opposed to other groups, the parathyroid hormone level decreased significantly (p<0.05) and that of vitamin D increased. In Group 3, there was a statistically significant (p<0.05) increase in the levels of osteocalcin and calcitonin. The vitamin D levels in Group 4 subjects increased significantly (p<0.05) relative to other groups.
Therefore, the young males residing in the northern region had a significant increase in bone formation owing to volleyball activities.
