Objective of the present study was to identify socio-psychological and sports-related predictors that affect team cohesion and teamwork of hockey players in the initial training groups.
Methods and structure of the study. Two hockey teams were formed in the course of the study: Group 1 was made of the athletes with the high performance rates (n=24), Group 2 - of the athletes with the low performance rates (n=23).
In the formation of the teams, the coach created the role-playing combinations on the basis of professional understanding and practical observation of each player, when the coach evaluated not only the players' athletic performance but also the qualities which, in the coach’s opinion, affect the efficiency of game combinations.
The following features were identified during the study: game thinking; volitional qualities; temperamental attribute; individual technical skill; athletic performance (coach’s expert assessments); 7 motivational components of sports activities.
Results of the study and conclusions. The findings indicated the possibility of determining the level of team cohesion and teamwork of young hockey players by considering their socio-psychological qualities and skills, influence of the motivational value of parental preferences, and efficient formation of game combinations.

Keywords: game combinations, motivation for sports, teamwork, psychological features.
