Objective of the study was to substantiate the Okinawa Goju-ryu Karate-do training method in conditions of higher educational institutions.
Methods and structure of the study. The Okinawa Guju-ryu Karate-do trainings were organized in the Department of Physical Education and Health Technologies of Volgograd State University in 2014. The trainings were based on the system developed in Jundokan (Okinawa) by Sensei Eiichi Miyazato holding the rank of 10th Dan and his student Bob Honiball - 8th Dan (United Kingdom). The Goju-ryu Karate-do practices enabled to address the following physical education tasks: promotion of students' health; development of motor skills; development of such mental qualities as attention concentration, self-analysis of movements; relaxation and self-regulation.
Results of the study and conclusions. The Goju-ryu training program consisted of two stages: preparatory and main (teaching the Goju-ryu technique).
At the preparatory stage, students develop their musculoskeletal system and practice the exercises aimed to improve their health (junbi undo, hojo undo, tensho undo).
At the main stage of Goju-ryu training in the higher educational institution, students start mastering the basic techniques (Kihon) and kata. It is extremely important to achieve the consistency of movements with respiration as well as sequential muscle tension and relaxation (balance between Go and Ju).
The Goju-ryu Karate-do training program in the higher educational institution is an effective means of health improvement and physical development of students, enabling to conduct trainings with different categories of students, which means that it can be recommended for university students.
